Senate Appropriations Minority Vice Chair Jon Bumstead, a Republican from Norton Shores, issued a statement following the annual January Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference. The conference, held on Friday, included projections by state fiscal and economic leaders regarding Michigan’s economic outlook and expected tax revenue.
Bumstead emphasized the need for caution as lawmakers begin work on the state budget. “As we start the budget process, our focus should be on how best to invest in shared priorities that are most impactful for our residents — like improving education, infrastructure and public safety — while also providing meaningful relief to families struggling to make ends meet,” he said.
He further stated: “We owe it to the people of Michigan to be responsible with their tax dollars. Given weak revenue projections for the next few years, we must be especially careful with state spending and work together to ensure taxpayer dollars support effective programs and deliver a positive return on investment for all the people of our state.”
The Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference is an annual event where officials review economic data and set expectations for available resources in the coming fiscal years. These projections help guide legislative decisions during Michigan’s budget process.
