Providers in Dexter billed $11,669 to Medicaid for Dental Services in 2024, based on figures reported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending database. This represented a 13% jump compared to 2023, when claims for Dental Services totaled $10,329.

Medicaid is a government-run public health insurance program managed by the states and funded by both federal and state governments. It serves low-income residents, families, seniors, children, and people with disabilities, and is one of the largest sections of the U.S. health care system.

Because Medicaid payments are taxpayer-funded, shifts in local billing provide insight into how community health care resources are distributed.

The “Dental Services” category includes a range of services billed to Medicaid, defined by the nature of the care and grouped using standardized HCPCS and CPT codes. For this analysis, each billing code was linked with a specific service group by consistent code prefixes and numeric ranges. This approach enables related service analysis without duplication or distorting category rankings over time.

Medicaid payments in several service categories grew, but Dental Services ranked fourth by dollar amount in Dexter for 2024.

Statewide in Michigan, Dental Services stood 11th in total Medicaid payments for 2024.

Between 2019 and 2024, Dexter’s Medicaid spending for Dental Services grew by $10,906, an increase of 1429.9%. Accelerated growth periods occurred, with notable year-over-year gains in 2023 and 2021.

Although Dental Services care was provided throughout Dexter, the payments were concentrated in certain ZIP codes. In 2024, ZIP code 48130 made up $11,668 of the Dental Services total, accounting for 100% of the Medicaid Dental Services payments in the city that year.

Within Dental Services, a small subset of billing codes drew most Medicaid payments.

For context, Medicaid Dental Services payments in Dexter increased 13% from 2023 to 2024, compared with a 36.4% jump covering all Medicaid claim categories in the city during the same timeframe.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services report that combined state and federal Medicaid expenses totaled $871.7 billion in fiscal year 2023. This represented about 18% of national health expenditures, a rise from $613.5 billion in 2019, before the pandemic.

That 40% increase over several years was largely the result of rising enrollment and greater use of services during and following the pandemic period.

Federal budget measures signed under the Trump administration included major provisions to reduce federal Medicaid funding and change the program’s structure. The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” enacted in 2025, is expected to slash over $1 trillion in federal Medicaid funding over the coming decade. It also implements work requirements and new cost-sharing rules that could lessen coverage or financial support for some enrollees. These changes are projected to shift more costs to the states and constrain federal Medicaid funding growth, while the program remains central to health care for millions of Americans.
