Eastern Michigan University and Ann Arbor Public Schools announced on Apr. 15 a new direct-admission partnership that guarantees eligible graduating seniors from the district admission to EMU, while removing several common barriers in the college application process.

The initiative is designed to make higher education more accessible by offering automatic admission, waiving application fees, and considering students for merit-based scholarships. This approach aims to help more students realize that attending college is possible.

Senior students at Ann Arbor Public Schools with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher who are on track to graduate will receive an invitation for direct admission to Eastern Michigan University. Students opting into the program will be automatically admitted after completing a brief opt-in form, which serves as their application. They will then receive confirmation of admission along with instructions for next steps such as submitting official transcripts.

“Eastern Michigan University is proud to stand with Ann Arbor Public Schools in opening wider doors to higher education,” said EMU President Brendan Kelly. “This partnership reflects our belief that talent is everywhere, and opportunity should be too. By simplifying the path to college, we’re sending a clear message to students across Ann Arbor: your future is within reach, and EMU is ready to walk alongside you as you take your next steps.” Superintendent Jazz Parks said, “We know the college application process can be challenging for students and families, and we are happy to partner with EMU to offer a simple, straightforward way for our graduates to continue with their education.” Katie Condon, vice president of enrollment management at Eastern Michigan University said, “Direct admission sends a message to students and families that higher education is within reach and that EMU is ready to support their success.” Dr. LaJoyce Brown added, “Through this partnership, we are creating a clear pathway to EMU by collaborating with neighboring educators to support students as they begin their postsecondary journey as Eagles.”

The program also includes support through information sessions led by admissions advisors in collaboration with high school counselors throughout the district.

Leaders from both institutions plan regular meetings in order to monitor progress of the program and strengthen pathways for future cohorts.

According to Eastern Michigan University’s official website, the university prepares its students through an educational focus aimed at meaningful societal contributions while offering more than 200 undergraduate majors and minors alongside various graduate programs. The campus features historic architecture combined with modern facilities designed for student success according to university sources. The institution has received national recognition across multiple fields as reported by its website.
