Eastern Michigan University will close on Monday, Jan. 26, due to heavy snowfall, hazardous driving conditions, and dangerously cold wind chill warnings. The decision was made to prioritize the safety of students, faculty, and staff.
According to the university’s announcement, “Due to the heavy snowfall, hazardous driving conditions and dangerously cold wind chill warnings, Eastern Michigan University will close tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 26, to help ensure the safety of our community.”
The closure affects all course activities—including class sessions, exams, and assignment submissions—unless classes were already scheduled as fully online and asynchronous. All employee meetings are canceled regardless of whether they were planned in person or via Zoom. Employees are instructed not to perform regular compensable work duties during the closure in line with university policy and collective bargaining agreements.
Some designated employees whose roles support continuous campus operations—such as those working in heating plant operations, physical plant maintenance, food service, public safety, WEMU radio station operations and other specified areas—are exempt from these guidelines and may be required to report for duty.
Residence halls and apartments will remain open throughout the weather closure. Campus dining services will be available at select locations; students are advised to check the EDining website for current information.
Students with off-campus placements in teaching or clinical settings should follow instructions provided by their placement coordinator or onsite instructor.
The university advises everyone to monitor their emich.edu email accounts and the main university website for updates regarding campus conditions.
