Eastern Michigan University announces leadership changes in provost and president’s offices

Eastern Michigan University President Brendan Kelly announced on April 13 several upcoming changes to the university’s administrative leadership team. The announcement includes transitions in both the Office of the Provost and the President’s Office.

Kelly said that Dr. Rhonda Longworth will return to faculty after many years as provost, with her official appointment taking effect on May 1, while her duties will transition immediately. “Dr. Longworth has shown outstanding dedication to the position in her years of service,” Kelly said. He added that an interim provost would be appointed during a national search for a new academic leader.

In addition, Leigh Greden will step down as Chief of Staff at the end of April after serving under both President Kelly and former President James Smith. Kelly acknowledged Greden’s long service, saying, “His long service to Eastern Michigan University and his deep knowledge of the institution have been important to the work of the Office of the President.” Greden is expected to complete ongoing projects before his departure.

Dr. David Schecter has been asked to serve as Interim Provost without eligibility for permanent appointment. According to Kelly, “He brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to help elevate and strengthen our work.” Schecter is set to begin his duties once he arrives in Ypsilanti.

Kelly addressed broader changes facing higher education: “Higher education is going through a period of transformation. EMU is experiencing those changes and pressures in a similar fashion as so many other institutions across the country.” He emphasized student success as central: “We must ensure that we are providing the foundational experiences that plant the seeds of success in the lives of students at every level.”
