Eastern Michigan University has introduced a new scholarship fund aimed at students pursuing careers in fermentation science. Starting in the 2025–26 academic year, undergraduate students can apply for the first scholarships dedicated to this field at EMU. The initiative is funded by a donation from Anne and Jeffrey Kittendorf.
“We are proud to announce these Fermentation Science scholarships,” said Chemistry Professor Cory Emal, director of the Fermentation Science Program. “The funds are intended to support and elevate students pursuing careers in an increasingly competitive fermentation industry.”
The scholarship will offer four annual awards of $2,500 each, split between two incoming and two upper-level students. Selection criteria include academic merit, interest in fermentation science, and financial need.
Students currently enrolled in the program say their experiences extend beyond traditional learning environments. EMU senior Althea Fillman described her time in the advanced Food Fermentation course: “You’re in a lab surrounded by food, your head’s full of knowledge, and it magically all clicks.”
More than 40% of EMU students receive Pell Grants. The new scholarship reflects Eastern Michigan University’s focus on expanding access to specialized education, drawing diverse talent, and supporting inclusion on campus.
Established in 2019, EMU’s Fermentation Science Program prepares students for work in brewing, food science, and biotechnology. Students gain practical skills with industry-standard equipment and collaborate with more than 10 Michigan breweries as well as organizations such as the Michigan Brewers Guild, The Brinery, Bløm Meadworks, and Schramm’s Mead.
Award recipients will be recognized at EMU’s annual awards celebration where donors can meet with them.
