Eastern Michigan University has awarded its top scholarship to two high school seniors, Adrian Spencer from Taylor Preparatory High School and Alayna Qwickley of Plymouth High School. The Presidential Scholarship, valued at more than $129,000, covers tuition, fees, and four years of room and board.

Spencer intends to major in cybersecurity with a business minor. Quickley plans to study Africology and African American Studies. The award is given annually to incoming students who show strong academic achievement, leadership abilities, and community involvement. More than 700 students applied for the scholarship this year; about 94 were selected for interviews.

“The Presidential Scholarship means more to me than financial support; it represents opportunity and relief,” said Spencer. “Throughout high school, I often worried about how I would afford college and continue my education. Receiving this scholarship lifts a major burden from my family and me, allowing me to focus on my goals rather than financial stress. It gives me the chance to grow academically, build meaningful connections, and prepare for my professional future. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to pursue my education at Eastern Michigan University. This scholarship motivates me to work even harder and make the most of the future ahead of me.”

Quickley also shared her reaction: “It feels like a big relief,” she said. “All of the struggles I’ve been through with my classes really paid off. Thank you for making this possible for me, thank you for the opportunity you’ve given me and I will continue to be my best.”

Ann Eisenberg, dean of The Honors College at EMU, stated: “The recipients of this scholarship have used their unique talents and perspectives to make meaningful contributions to their schools and communities. We are excited to welcome these outstanding students to Eastern Michigan University. Their curiosity, leadership, and passion for service will strengthen our campus community, and we are proud to support them as they pursue their educational goals.”

Presidential Scholars also join EMU’s Honors College where they can access research opportunities as well as leadership development programs.
