Eastern Michigan University held its fourth annual Thanksgiving food giveaway, distributing free meals to approximately 1,000 families this holiday season. The event was organized as a drive-thru outside the George Gervin GameAbove Center and operated on a first-come, first-served basis.

EMU President James Smith and his wife, Connie Ruhl-Smith, joined volunteers in handing out frozen turkeys and hams, pies, baked goods, and locally grown produce to attendees. In addition to food items, families received complimentary tickets to any EMU men’s or women’s basketball game during the current season.

“Rising food costs and the SNAP benefits issue have been significant,” said Smith. “We know that our efforts are important to our community and this kind of event is much needed.”

Several participants expressed gratitude for the assistance provided during the holidays. One attendee shared her experience: “We’re doing a joint Thanksgiving for more than 20 relatives. After the recent passing of a loved one, EMU allowed us to make a large feast happen.”

Another recipient described how reductions in SNAP benefits have affected her family: “With the SNAP benefits being cut, my family lost about $300 a month. I got in line around 7:30 a.m. I was hesitant to come at first because I felt embarrassed, but seeing so many other people lined up made me feel that I wasn’t alone.”

A local student attended not for herself but on behalf of someone else in need: “I don’t personally struggle with food, but I wanted to pick up a meal for someone who really needed it instead,” she said. “I’m transferring to EMU soon, and coming to these events allows me to immerse myself in this community and be given the resources to do my part and give back to others.”

The event was supported by sponsors including the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation, DTE Energy, Ann Arbor Marriott Ypsilanti at Eagle Crest Hotel, and Eastern Michigan University Credit Union. The “Thankful For You” initiative is an extension of “Thank-Ful,” which is led nationally by Chartwells—the company responsible for managing EMU’s dining services.
