Eastern Michigan University has received the 2026–2027 Military Friendly Schools Gold-level designation among large public institutions, according to a March 31 announcement. The recognition highlights the university’s ongoing efforts to support veterans and military-connected students through dedicated resources and services.

The Military Friendly Schools designation is awarded based on public data, survey responses, and assessments of an institution’s ability to meet standards in student recruitment, retention, academic progress, graduation rates, career placement, and support services for veterans and their families. More than 3,200 organizations participated in this year’s evaluation process.

“We are grateful for our veterans and military families as they bring diverse experiences, resilience and purpose to campus, and we are proud to honor their service through meaningful, daily support,” said Lt. Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.) Michael Wise, assistant director of Military and Veteran Services at Eastern Michigan University. Wise also credited the success of EMU’s veteran programs to its TRIO-Veteran Student Support Services grant staff led by Lt. Colonel (Ret.) Wayne Doyle.

Nina Thomas, a senior majoring in health administration at EMU, described her experience with the Veterans Center as “nothing short of incredible.” She said: “The EMU Veterans Center truly represents what it means to support service members both professionally and personally, whether they are active students currently serving or veterans… The resources, communication and services have always been consistent and clearly driven by a genuine desire to help me succeed in my education.”

EMU offers tailored academic advising for military learners as well as career development initiatives that ease the transition from service to civilian employment.
