Eastern Michigan University has received a Silver rating in the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), according to an April 14 announcement. The system is managed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education and measures sustainability performance at colleges and universities worldwide.

The new Silver rating represents progress from EMU’s previous Bronze status and highlights the university’s increased commitment to environmental responsibility. More than 900 institutions use STARS, making it a widely recognized tool for assessing sustainability in higher education.

“This Silver rating is a clear sign of the momentum building across Eastern Michigan University,” said Eastern Michigan University President Brendan Kelly. “Our students expect us to lead with purpose, and this recognition reflects the work happening every day to create a campus that is healthier, more efficient, and more sustainable. We are proud of the progress we’ve made, and we are committed to pushing even further.”

EMU’s report highlighted several key achievements: reductions in greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing over 150 gasoline-powered vehicles from roads each year between 2020 and 2024; implementation of a new sustainability-focused learning outcome for general education; zero-waste events during student orientation; improved recycling practices with over half of demolition materials diverted from landfills; creation of a new sustainability manager position; composting nearly 12 tons of organic material in one academic year; winning an award for diversity and inclusion in athletics; student athletes contributing more than 10,000 hours of community service; and programs supporting underserved students.

“This achievement reflects years of collaboration and a shared belief that sustainability must be woven into the fabric of our institution,” said Ron Rich, Senior Lecturer in Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology as well as chair of EMU President’s Sustainability Commission. “Moving from Bronze to Silver shows what is possible when faculty, staff, and students work together with intention. It also gives us a roadmap for the next phase of our work.”

The university will display its official STARS Silver seal while remaining active within AASHE as it plans future improvements guided by its latest report.
