Eastern Michigan University hosts Digital Divas Conference for middle school girls in STEM

Eastern Michigan University’s GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology will host its annual Digital Divas Conference for approximately 200 middle school girls on April 17 at the EMU Student Center in Ypsilanti.

The event aims to inspire young women to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), with a focus on increasing equity and inclusion within these fields. The conference is designed to prepare the next generation of leaders by fostering innovation and providing hands-on experiences.

“Digital Divas has opened doors for young women in STEM, encouraging them to pursue impactful careers in fields where they are too often underrepresented,” said Mohamad Qatu, dean of the GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology.

Participants from schools such as Forsythe Middle School, Hope of Detroit Academy Middle School, Madison Middle School, Slauson Middle School, St. Anne Catholic Grade School, Strong Middle School, and Tecumseh Middle School will attend workshops covering topics like chemistry, cybersecurity, engineering, esports, physics, and technology. Sessions include activities led by university clubs as well as industry professionals from companies such as NSK and ITC Holdings. Sponsors for this year’s event include GameAbove along with support from DTE Foundation, Toyota, Wacker Chemical Corporation (WACKER), ITC Holdings Corp., and the American Association of University Women Ann Arbor Branch.

Since its inception in 2010, Digital Divas has reached more than 10,000 middle and high school girls across southeast Michigan. The program not only sparks curiosity but also helps shape future innovators through interactive learning opportunities. Eastern Michigan University prepares students to make significant contributions to society through its educational focus according to the official website.
