Eastern Michigan University (EMU) hosted the TIAA Scholarship Workshop on February 10, 2026, at Halle Library. The event was designed to support first-generation students by providing mentorship, networking opportunities, and assistance with scholarship applications. EMU faculty and staff offered guidance to help students address financial barriers in their pursuit of higher education.
Anthony Webster, director of TRIO Student Support Services, emphasized the importance of both access to information and guidance for student success. “Opportunities like this scholarship and the workshop that supports it help close critical financial gaps while also reinforcing that students are not expected to navigate these processes alone,” said Webster. “As a first-generation college graduate myself, I know firsthand that access to information is important, but access paired with guidance and sense-making is what truly moves the needle.”
To qualify for the TIAA scholarship, applicants must be first-generation students aiming for careers in fields such as business, marketing, or human resources. They must be enrolled full-time for the 2026-27 academic year and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.8. Up to 15 scholarships will be awarded in amounts ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 based on academic achievement, leadership qualities, and involvement in school or community activities.
Webster added: “Education is intended to be transformative, but that transformation is disrupted when students are constantly worried about whether they can afford to stay enrolled. When students are supported financially, their priorities can remain centered on learning, growth, and career preparation.”
EMU provides various forms of financial support aimed at reducing stress related to tuition and essential expenses. These include financial aid advising services, financial literacy programs, and assistance with finding scholarships through offices such as TRIO Student Support Services, the Holman Success Center, and the RISE Scholars Program.
TIAA’s commitment extends beyond this workshop; it includes events like First-Generation College Student Week in November 2025 celebrating first-generation student experiences. The scholarship program itself is managed by Scholarship America.
The application deadline for this scholarship is February 26, 2026. More details about eligibility requirements can be found on EMU’s website.
