Eastern Michigan University has opened the first of two new green spaces on its Ypsilanti campus, transforming former residence hall and apartment sites into outdoor areas intended for relaxation and community use. The project is part of a broader effort to enhance the campus environment and provide accessible spaces for students, faculty, and visitors.
On September 23, construction fencing was removed from the Brown-Munson site, making it available to the university community. The area now features a restored sidewalk around its perimeter, upgraded lighting, and a large open grass field.
Walter Kraft, EMU’s vice president for communications, said: “The demolition of legacy buildings presented an opportunity to reimagine these spaces in ways that directly benefit student well-being. The park-like setting, with its expansive green areas and enhanced lighting, creates a welcoming respite for students and employees alike.”
A second green space at the Jones-Goddard site is expected to open in early October. During demolition work at this location, several mature trees were preserved. Infrastructure was also updated as part of the redevelopment. When finished, the site will include a plaza with seating areas, decorative limestone salvaged from previous structures as a nod to the site’s history, Wi-Fi access, and an area designated for food trucks.
The creation of these green spaces reflects Eastern Michigan University’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and student-centered campus design. The university aims for these developments to support student well-being while fostering opportunities for social connection.
