Eastern Michigan University President James Smith has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Leadership Award for the United States and Canada, according to a Mar. 24 announcement from the university.
The award is considered one of the most prestigious honors in educational advancement, recognizing leaders who have demonstrated exceptional vision in advancing their institutions’ missions, strengthening philanthropic culture, and supporting student success. Smith’s selection reflects his impact on Eastern Michigan University since becoming president in 2016.
Sue Cunningham, CASE President and CEO, praised Smith’s achievements in a letter notifying him of the honor. “President Smith has brought Eastern Michigan University to new levels of success,” Cunningham wrote. “His focus on student success through the Presidential Difference Maker Scholarship reinforces the institution’s core mission. His commitment to diversity and inclusion is deeply inspiring, as are his efforts to connect EMU with the local community.”
Smith has led initiatives such as modernizing academic programs and campus facilities while expanding access opportunities for students. Under his leadership, EMU launched programs like Difference Maker and expanded support services for students across Southeast Michigan. Cunningham also recognized his work in promoting philanthropy at EMU by establishing donor engagement strategies and launching Give Rise, a fundraising campaign that generated record support for scholarships and campus improvements. “Through historic partnerships and sustainability initiatives, you have united donors around a compelling vision for the future,” Cunningham said.
Smith will be formally honored at the CASE Summit for Leaders in Advancement taking place July 20–22 in Seattle.
