Eastern Michigan University assistant professor Selyna Beverly has received a $500,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award to study and improve peer collaboration in engineering classrooms. The project aims to develop strategies that foster positive teamwork, enhance learning experiences, and address challenges students face during group work.
The NSF CAREER Award is regarded as one of the foundation’s most competitive honors for early-career faculty. It recognizes academic leaders with significant potential in research and education.
“This award promotes positive peer interactions in engineering education to improve student retention, engagement, and support for all STEM students,” said Beverly, who is an assistant professor in the Department of Leadership and Counseling at Eastern Michigan University. “At its core, the research is about creating and sustaining inclusive learning environments, which aligns with EMU’s values.”
Beverly’s multi-year project will analyze how student behaviors impact learning outcomes in engineering courses. The research will identify practical methods instructors can use to reduce negative interactions that might affect engagement or academic performance.
The project will be conducted in several phases: In the first year, interviews with instructors and undergraduate students as well as peer surveys will be carried out. During years two and three, Beverly plans to observe classrooms and conduct interviews across multiple engineering courses at four case study sites. These efforts will involve collaboration with representatives from both R1 and R2 Carnegie-classified research universities. In the final years of the grant period, comprehensive data analysis will lead to the creation of scenario-based videos and resources designed for instructors to facilitate effective peer collaboration.
Research findings are expected to be shared through podcasts, workshops, and presentations at local and national conferences.
Scott Taesadale, director of Eastern’s Office of Research, Development, and Administration commented on the significance of this recognition: “The NSF CAREER Award is one of the most competitive and prestigious awards offered by the National Science Foundation. Each year, more than 3,000 proposals are submitted, and only 400 to 500 are funded. In 2024, just 23% of proposals submitted under the Directorate for Engineering were successful.”
Beverly expressed appreciation for her selection: “I am incredibly grateful that the NSF believes in my ability to carry out this important research,” she said. “This work represents years of dedication and the support of an amazing network of mentors and colleagues who have championed me along the way.”
