Eastern Michigan University has been awarded $985,000 in federal funding to expand its aviation program, according to a Mar. 10 announcement. The funding was secured through the Fiscal Year 2026 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act with support from U.S. Senator Gary Peters and U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin.

The grant aims to help EMU increase enrollment and train more aviation professionals for the region’s workforce needs. This investment is expected to strengthen the university’s ability to prepare students for careers in the growing aviation industry.

“This grant will strengthen EMU’s aviation program by expanding curriculum and improving training for students,” said Mohamad Qatu, dean of the GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology. “It will also help local companies find skilled graduates and allow us to hire new expert faculty.”

EMU plans to use the funds to upgrade training equipment, enhance hands-on learning opportunities, and hire faculty with specialized expertise in aviation. These improvements are designed to ensure that graduates are well prepared for industry demands and can contribute effectively to economic growth in the area.

The university offers bachelor’s degrees in Aviation Flight Technology and Aviation Management Technology. The flight technology program prepares students for professional pilot roles by helping them earn necessary certifications, while the management technology track focuses on leadership skills through business and safety training.
