Eastern Michigan University’s TRIO Upward Bound program has reported continued positive outcomes in supporting student achievement and college access. The latest academic cycle saw 91% of enrolled students returning from fall to winter, indicating strong engagement with the program. Participants achieved a 3.06 GPA for the fall semester and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.16.
“These outcomes speak to the strength of our model and the commitment of our students,” said Courtney Morris, director of TRIO Upward Bound at Eastern Michigan University. “Upward Bound is not just about college acceptance, it’s about sustained academic growth, accountability and helping students believe in their ability to succeed long term.”
The program, funded by federal grants, serves students from Ypsilanti Community Schools and recently secured renewed funding to continue its services for 89 students. These services include tutoring, after-school programs, mentoring, and college-readiness support. A key component is the Summer Academy, a five-and-a-half-week residential experience on EMU’s campus that introduces students to college-level coursework and campus life.
Each year, TRIO Upward Bound supports between 15 and 20 seniors. Nearly all graduates are accepted into college, with 95% enrolling immediately after high school graduation. About 35% of these participants continue their education at Eastern Michigan University (EMU), where they can access additional support through TRIO Student Support Services.
Students report benefits beyond academics as well. Brandon Jones, an EMU TRIO Upward Bound scholar, stated: “Joining Upward Bound helped me grow both socially and personally. Through Summer Academy and travel opportunities, I built confidence and connections that opened my eyes to new possibilities. As I begin this next chapter, I’ll carry the lessons and confidence I gained from Upward Bound with me.”
Caleb Smithson, a senior who joined the program as a freshman, credited it with helping him balance schoolwork and athletics: “Upward Bound pushed me to excel both as a student and an athlete,” Smithson said. “Through tutoring, workshops and Summer Academy, I strengthened my academic skills while staying on track and exploring colleges that fit my goals.”
Families also recognize the value of the program’s structure. Melanise Vaughn, Smithson’s aunt, commented: “Upward Bound has truly been Caleb’s village. The accountability, structure and care the program provides have made a lasting difference in his academic and personal growth.”
The program has expanded experiential learning opportunities recently; in summer 2025 it organized its first out-of-state trip in nearly six decades by visiting Universal Studios and the University of Central Florida during its Summer Academy session. This initiative is supported by Engage EMU, EMU Housing, local educators, and community partners.
Looking forward, TRIO Upward Bound plans to host its second annual multi-day spring excursion during academic break for further exposure to college campuses outside southeast Michigan.
