Eastern Michigan University announced on Mar. 10 that its Center for Digital Engagement, with support from Ann Arbor SPARK, is offering 48 paid internship positions through the Digital Summer Clinic. The program provides students with hands-on experience in digital marketing and technology while connecting them with industry mentors and professional development opportunities.
The Digital Summer Clinic, now in its twelfth year, aims to prepare college students and recent graduates for careers in digital fields by giving them real-world experience working with startup companies and technology-focused organizations. This initiative comes as smaller and medium-sized companies face challenges in the labor market.
“Smaller and medium-sized companies have had a harder time in the labor market, so I think this year’s internship will be a win for our students and employers alike,” said Bud Gibson, professor and director of EMU’s Center for Digital Engagement.
The internships are open to area college students and recent graduates, including those enrolled in certificate programs. Participants gain experience developing websites and apps, creating digital content, managing social media campaigns, and supporting advertising initiatives. Interns also receive guidance on building professional portfolios and participate in weekly mentorship sessions with industry professionals. Applications are open through April 24 on the Digital Summer Clinic website.
The program runs from June 8 through Aug. 7 in a hybrid format. Interns work ten hours per week at $20 per hour, collaborating in teams of two with companies that are clients of Ann Arbor SPARK’s high-tech incubator. Past participants have gone on to careers at organizations such as Google, iProspect, and Accenture.
“I challenge those considering the internship to always be curious and give the clinic a shot because it does provide you with a lot of opportunities that one may not have yet discovered,” said Sam Kinsler, former intern. “This is a great opportunity to test your skills, enhance something you thought you were good at or learn a different skill set.”
“We’ve managed to attract mentors from companies like Google, Pinterest, Duo Security and Zingerman’s who are dedicated to helping interns from every background succeed,” said Gibson. “Many of our mentors worked through school, wondered how to get into professional roles, and ultimately found their way forward. They are all problem solvers dedicated to helping interns find success.”
