Eastern Michigan University’s podcast “Enlighten U” has released a new episode focused on bipolar disorder, aiming to increase awareness and understanding among college students. The November 2025 episode, titled “Real Talk on Bipolar Disorder: Myths, Management, and Mental Health in College,” features EMU graduate student Riley Coffee sharing his personal experiences with the condition.

Coffee discusses the challenges he faced before receiving a diagnosis at age 19. He explains that while learning about his diagnosis brought relief, it also led to unexpected difficulties. “I had always lived in the highs or the lows,” Coffee said. “When I finally felt neutral, I didn’t know who I was.”

Aesha Mustafa, Ph.D., assistant professor in leadership and counseling at EMU and resident mental health expert for the podcast, joins Coffee to discuss common misconceptions about bipolar disorder. She addresses how symptoms can be confused with other conditions such as ADHD or anxiety disorders. Mustafa also provides information about warning signs and outlines treatment options for students seeking help.

The conversation aims to reduce stigma and offers guidance for those living with bipolar disorder or supporting someone who is. According to both guests, effective management of the condition is possible through understanding and appropriate support.

The episode is available on YouTube and major podcast platforms. Listeners interested in more information or wishing to contribute topics can contact Lolita Cummings at lcummin2@emich.edu or Melissa Thrasher at mthrashe@emich.edu.
