Eastern Michigan University’s Swoop’s Food Pantry announced on March 9 that it is launching the “Stock Swoop’s Shelves” food drive to address a significant increase in student use. The campaign, running from March 4 to March 22, aims to collect unexpired food items and ensure continued support for students facing food insecurity.

The growing number of students relying on the pantry highlights ongoing concerns about food security within the university community. More than 100 students are using the pantry most days, according to organizers. The initiative seeks help from both campus and local community members to keep shelves stocked and meet this rising need.

Nick Pomante, a member of the Swoop Food Pantries Advisory Board, said, “The increased demand highlights the crucial role Swoop’s Pantry plays in providing food security for our student population. We rely heavily on the generosity of our community to keep our shelves stocked and meet the needs of our growing number of users.” Paul Leigton, also a member of the advisory board, added, “We are calling on everyone who cares about our students to join the ‘Stock Swoop’s Shelves’ movement. Every contribution counts, and together, we can significantly impact the lives of our students.”

Participants in the drive are encouraged to form groups with creative themes such as “Taco Night” or “Baby Items,” set collection goals, and gather essential items like canned goods, pasta, rice, beans, and protein sources. Organizers suggest adding fun elements like contests or decorated bins to boost engagement.
