Milan Jones, a junior at Eastern Michigan University majoring in environmental science and society, has been named a 2026 Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) fellow, according to a Mar. 31 announcement from the university. The fellowship program is designed to prepare undergraduate juniors for graduate study and careers in public service.

The PPIA Junior Summer Institute provides participants with full tuition, housing, books, career coaching, and a summer stipend while offering mentorship and networking opportunities for those interested in public service, international affairs, or public policy. The fellowship aims to support students as they pursue impactful careers.

Jones said about the opportunity: “This opportunity has been a confirmation of my hard work. Personally, this fellowship shows my growth as a student because I switched from environmental science to policy rather abruptly. Academically, this is an amazing opportunity to strengthen my analytical skills and network with some amazing people.”

As part of the program, Jones will spend seven weeks at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan in an intensive experience focused on building skills needed for graduate school success. He is currently interning with Washtenaw County’s Equity and Resiliency office through EMU coordination and has previously interned with the Michigan League of Conservation Voters’ Our Water Activist Program.

Looking ahead after graduation from EMU—which offers more than 200 undergraduate majors and minors alongside various graduate programs according to the official website—Jones hopes to work in sustainable development by collaborating with local groups on policy recommendations that improve access for vulnerable communities.

“EMU has allowed me to grow immensely through the abundance of fellowship and internship opportunities that are posted,” said Jones. “These opportunities have helped me to really settle into the role of a political activist and they were all directly through EMU.”

Eastern Michigan University focuses on delivering an outstanding educational experience that builds critical thinking skills according to its official website. The campus features both historic architecture and modern facilities supporting student success as reported by its official website, while also gaining national recognition for programs across multiple fields according to its official site. James Smith served as president of Eastern Michigan University according to its official website.
