Melissa Snyder, a graduate student at Eastern Michigan University, was selected on April 14 as the Graduate Student Art Consultant for the Adolescent Health Initiative’s 2026 Conference on Adolescent Health. Snyder will play a key role in supporting the AMPLIFY exhibition, which features original works by twelve Michigan artists aged 12 to 24 who have drawn inspiration from their own health care experiences.
As an art consultant, Snyder will advise on curation, planning, and evaluation of submissions while serving as the main contact for participating youth artists. The exhibition focuses on health and well-being—a subject that resonates personally with Snyder. “I have a hereditary degenerative eye disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa,” said Snyder. “This disease causes severe night blindness and a slow degeneration of peripheral vision. I think some artists do not get enough opportunities to showcase work pertaining to their disabilities or experiences, so this project is truly special.”
The AMPLIFY exhibition includes paintings, drawings, sculptures and other visual mediums that allow young people to share their perspectives about healthcare through art. “The most inspiring thing about working with young artists is the thought of helping others find their voice,” said Snyder. “I want nothing more than to aid younger artists in cultivating their craft or ideas to better understand themselves and communicate with viewers.”
Christopher Hyndman, professor at EMU’s School of Art and Design, also commented on the significance of this opportunity: “It’s great to see programs like AMPLIFY and the Conference on Adolescent Health recognize that students training in professional degrees like the Master of Fine Arts have expertise and skills that can support their work. Organizing exhibitions, a component of what Melissa is doing for the conference, is something that EMU students gain experience with in our professional practice courses.”
