Eastern Michigan University will host the 2026 Workshop-Conference on Teaching Philosophy from July 22 to July 26, according to an April 7 announcement. The event will mark the 50th anniversary of the American Association of Philosophy Teachers and is set to take place on the university’s campus.

The conference is significant as it brings together philosophy educators from K-12 schools, colleges, and universities across the country. Participants will explore new and practical approaches for teaching philosophy. “Hosting the 50th anniversary of this conference is a way to prove that EMU is committed to teaching excellence and academic innovation,” said John Koolage, professor and department head of history and philosophy. “The AAPT has changed not just how philosophy is taught at the college level and beyond, but it has changed how professors think about teaching and its place within the philosophical research endeavor.”

Founded in 1976, the American Association of Philosophy Teachers supports educators through professional development opportunities, mentorship programs, scholarly research publications such as its journal AAPT Studies in Pedagogy, as well as awards for teaching excellence and innovation grants.

This year’s milestone event will feature interactive workshops, collaborative sessions, networking activities like a wine and cheese reception, film series screenings, a banquet dinner, informal evening gatherings, and a selective seminar for graduate students co-sponsored by the American Philosophical Association with support from other organizations.

“EMU philosophers are anticipating the opportunity to welcome friends and colleagues from around the country,” Koolage said. “We are proud to be a part of ongoing conversations and innovations in teaching that bring philosophy into everyday lives.”
