Eastern Michigan University’s Honors College will host “Repainting Herstory: Celebrating Women in Art” on March 10 as part of Women’s History Month, according to a university announcement. The event, organized with the student group Feminism for All Beings, will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Honors College Reception Hall in Ypsilanti.

The program aims to foster community among students while encouraging creativity and engagement with the contributions of women artists. Ann Eisenberg, dean of the Honors College, said, “This event is designed to meet our objective of building community among students while also stimulating creativity and intellectual growth. It reflects our commitment to learning outside the traditional classroom and encourages students to engage thoughtfully with women’s voices that have shaped the artistic landscape.”

The evening will focus on three influential women artists: Georgia O’Keeffe, Tala Madani, and Helen Frankenthaler. Participants will receive background information about each artist and examples of their work before creating their own paintings or recreating selected pieces inspired by these figures. Nick Malendowski, event co-organizer, said, “We wanted to create a space where students could slow down, learn about influential women in art and express themselves creatively without pressure. This is about accessibility, recognition and making Women’s History Month meaningful in a hands-on way.”

The event is open primarily to students regardless of painting experience and includes light refreshments. Organizers say it connects the broader celebration of Women’s History Month with an opportunity for creative expression.
