Eastern Michigan University’s Department of World Languages will hold its annual honors event on April 7, celebrating the achievements of students and alumni who have excelled in language studies and applied their skills professionally. The event is scheduled from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Student Center Ballroom in Ypsilanti.
The gathering aims to highlight the importance of multilingualism and cultural awareness as tools for global engagement. The department’s mission focuses on developing leaders who can make a positive impact worldwide through language proficiency and cross-cultural understanding.
The program will begin with a cultural showcase featuring food, music, and performances that represent the diverse backgrounds within the department. Faculty members will present awards to students for academic excellence in languages, while also honoring alumni working across sectors such as education, business, media, and health care.
“Our Honors Event is about more than recognition,” said Michael Foster, associate professor of language. “It is about celebrating growth, transformation and real-world impact. We see students return from study abroad more fluent, more confident and more intellectually curious about the world. That curiosity stays with them and shapes how they engage with different cultures and communities throughout their lives.” Foster also said, “Whether it is former students becoming language teachers, producing creative work inspired by their studies or using their language skills in professional settings, our alumni demonstrate the benefits of being multilingual and culturally aware. These are the kinds of skills that set our students apart and position them as leaders.”
The department emphasizes hands-on learning through study abroad programs, internships, service-learning opportunities, and teaching experiences that help students apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations.
