Eastern Michigan University will hold an International Women’s Day celebration on March 10 in the Student Center Grand Ballroom B, according to a university announcement. The event, organized by the Women’s Resource Center, will take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and is open to the public.
The program aims to highlight gender equity and honor women’s contributions across generations. This year’s theme is “Empowering, Inspiring and Educating Generations,” reflecting a focus on advancing gender equity through institutional change rather than symbolic gestures.
A central feature of the event is the unveiling of the inaugural Legacy Gallery exhibit. The gallery will showcase historical women leaders and unsung heroines nominated by students, faculty, and staff at Eastern Michigan University. Dr. Kimberly Ferrell, coordinator for the Women’s Resource Center, said, “This exhibit reflects our responsibility to preserve and elevate the narratives of women who transformed history. When students see themselves reflected in stories of impact and resilience, it expands what they believe is possible.”
Attendees can explore interactive displays that highlight women’s labor, courage, and leadership in shaping social, political, and cultural landscapes. The event also offers opportunities for community members to engage with local elected officials during the program. Ferrell said, “International Women’s Day at EMU is an invitation. An invitation to lead courageously, to build across differences and to recognize that gender justice is not peripheral to institutional excellence. It is foundational to it.”
The celebration supports the mission of EMU’s Women’s Resource Center by fostering equity and advocacy for women and gender-expansive individuals through intersectionality and leadership development.
