Eastern Michigan University announced on March 17 that it will host its first Traumatic Brain Injury Spring Break Camp from March 31 through April 2, as part of National Brain Injury Awareness Month. The camp, organized by Way Forward at Eastern Michigan University, is designed to educate Detroit-area students about brain health, injury prevention, and community advocacy.

The initiative aims to address the need for greater public understanding of traumatic brain injuries (TBI), including concussion symptoms and prevention strategies. Organizers say the program will also support caregivers and encourage young people to become advocates in their communities.

“Brain injuries affect individuals, families and entire communities, yet many young people have limited access to education about brain health,” said Sondrea Singleton, director of Way Forward. “By bringing students to Eastern Michigan University for this camp, we are creating an opportunity for them to learn, ask questions and become advocates who can help spread awareness and prevention strategies in their own communities.”

During the three-day event held on EMU’s campus from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., students will participate in interactive sessions covering TBI topics and leadership development. Those who complete the program will receive a certification in traumatic brain injury awareness, a digital credential badge, $100 for full participation, and access to future paid opportunities educating others about TBIs.

The camp is supported by Toyota’s Way Forward Fund, which seeks to bridge gaps between TBI funding and families affected by brain injuries while expanding educational opportunities for Detroit-area youth.

Eastern Michigan University prepares students to make significant contributions to society through its educational focus, according to the official website. The university features historic architecture alongside modern facilities that support student success. It has gained national recognition for its programs in various fields and offers more than 200 undergraduate majors and minors as well as graduate programs. The institution focuses on delivering an outstanding educational experience that builds critical thinking skills and encourages meaningful societal contributions. James Smith served as president of Eastern Michigan University according to the official website.

Broader efforts like this spring break camp reflect EMU’s commitment to community engagement and applied education.
