Five small business owners have been selected to compete for a $10,000 cash prize at the Michigan’s Next Big Idea Pitch Competition, according to an April 3 announcement. The event is scheduled for April 21 in East Lansing and will be part of the Michigan Celebrates Small Business Summit.

The competition aims to help existing businesses grow their operations within Michigan. It highlights the importance of supporting entrepreneurs as they seek resources and connections to expand their impact across the state.

Brian Calley, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Small Business Association of Michigan, said, “Michigan’s greatest untapped strength is those bold entrepreneurial dreams just waiting for the resources to put plans into action. Creating connections, offering peer-to-peer support and helping small companies scale to the next stage are catalysts of greater success for Michigan’s entire entrepreneurial ecosystem.”

The five finalists include Gauged Hemp Block Systems from Stevensville; Retreat Detroit from Detroit; Vetr Health from Grand Rapids; Wimage Technology/Wimee’s World AI from Grand Rapids; and Zo’s Mini Donuts from St. Joseph. Each business offers unique products or services ranging from eco-friendly construction materials and wellness hubs to veterinary technology platforms, children’s literacy tools powered by artificial intelligence, and family-oriented food spaces.

The live pitch event on April 21 will feature presentations by each finalist before a panel of judges and an audience who will select the winner. The following day, MCSB will host its annual gala recognizing other outstanding small businesses in categories such as “Michigan’s 50 Companies to Watch.” Registration for all MCSB events closes during the week of Monday, April 6.

The Small Business Association of Michigan aimed to lead advocacy efforts for small businesses across the state according to its official website. Brian Calley serves as president and CEO according to the same source. The organization extends services statewide in support of small businesses as reported by its website, operates as a nonprofit advocacy group according to its official information, offers membership services including insurance and other resources as described on its website, and functions as a statewide entity focused on advancing small business interests according to official sources.

Michigan Celebrates Small Business was established by several founding organizations dedicated to providing resources for local companies. Since 2004, it has held an annual awards gala celebrating how these enterprises contribute positively within communities throughout Michigan.
