The Fostering Futures Scholarship Trust Fund ‘Making a Difference Gala’ in Grand Rapids raised more than $50,000 for college scholarships benefiting Michigan youth who have experienced foster care, according to an April 14 announcement by the Michigan Education Trust and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

The event aims to increase access to higher education for former foster care youth, who often face financial barriers. The need is highlighted by data showing that while up to 85% of students with foster care experience complete high school by their mid-20s, only about 8% to 11% go on to earn a postsecondary degree—five times lower than the national average.

Held at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Grand Rapids and attended by nearly 200 guests, this year’s gala raised approximately $50,048—about $10,000 more than last year. MET, which is part of the Michigan Department of Treasury’s prepaid tuition savings program, hosted the event.

“I want to thank our donors, sponsors, community partners and volunteers for standing with Michiganders who experienced foster care,” State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks said. “Education transforms lives. Together, we can continue breaking down barriers. Together, we can open doors. And together, we can foster the futures of Michigan’s extraordinary young people.”

A partnership between MET and MDHHS makes these scholarships possible for some of the nearly 10,000 youth currently in Michigan’s foster care system. The Fostering Futures Scholarship Trust Fund provides support covering tuition and fees as well as books and room and board at vocational schools or colleges across Michigan. This academic year alone saw support provided to 474 students attending 64 institutions.

“Every young person deserves the opportunity to pursue the educational path that is right for them and their career goals,” said Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director. “MDHHS is proud to be part of Fostering Futures, which assists students who have experienced foster care with tuition and fees, books and supplies, and room and board for students at a vocation school, apprenticeship or college.”

Donations are still being accepted online through www.FosteringFutures-MI.com. Since its founding in 2012 as a Section 170(c) nonprofit organization eligible for income tax deductions on contributions received each year—over $1.4 million has been raised—with all funds awarded annually as scholarships.
