The Michigan Department of Transportation announced on April 7 that resurfacing work will begin April 13 on sections of M-60, M-86, and M-99 in Calhoun and St. Joseph counties. The project will also include improvements to the Tekonsha carpool lot.
This $1.7 million investment involves repaving a total of 5.5 miles across three state highways: 1.1 miles of M-86 from Nottawa Street to Shimmel Road in Centreville, 3.6 miles of M-60 from Glendale Avenue to Main Street in Burlington, and 0.8 miles of M-99 from Powers Street to Leigh Street (M-60) in Homer. The work includes milling and asphalt overlay, new pavement markings, and upgrades to sidewalk ramps for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The department said single-lane closures are expected during construction, which is scheduled to finish by July 17. Economic modeling indicates that this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support approximately 14 jobs.
According to the official website, the Michigan Department of Transportation manages nearly 10,000 miles of state highways as well as more than 4,800 bridges, over 2,700 miles of non-motorized trails, hundreds of miles of railroad track, and various airports across the state. The department employs more than 2,800 people throughout seven regions and maintains multiple transportation service centers statewide according to the official website.
The agency’s mission focuses on serving communities through transportation efforts according to its official website. Its leadership team includes a director along with chief administrative officer and other key executives according to the official website.
The new pavement aims to improve ride quality for drivers while better lane visibility is expected due to upgraded markings; sidewalk ramp enhancements are intended for improved accessibility for pedestrians.
