The Michigan Department of Transportation announced on April 14 that it will hold a public meeting on April 21 to discuss the upcoming replacement of the M-44/M-37 (E. Beltline Avenue) bridge over Interstate 96 in Grand Rapids. The meeting will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. at the MDOT Transportation Service Center, located at 2660 Leonard St. NE.

The meeting aims to inform community stakeholders, city representatives, local businesses, and interested residents about the project’s details, traffic maintenance plans, and scheduling for the bridge replacement set for 2027. Attendees can visit any time during the event to learn more and provide feedback.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation’s official website, MDOT manages nearly 10,000 miles of state highways, more than 4,800 bridges, and various transportation facilities across Michigan. The department also oversees non-motorized trails spanning approximately 2,700 miles and maintains railroads and airports throughout the state.

MDOT has more than 2,800 employees working within seven regions and operates a network of transportation service centers statewide according to its official website. The agency’s responsibilities include maintaining M routes as well as interstate (I) and U.S. (US) routes; overseeing bridges; supporting rail services; managing public transit systems; running aviation programs; developing non-motorized trails; and upholding safety standards according to MDOT.

Leadership at MDOT includes a director along with key executives such as a chief administrative officer and chief operations officer according to its official website. The department’s mission focuses on serving people, communities, and supporting economic growth through transportation initiatives according to MDOT.

The planned project not only involves replacing the original East Beltline Avenue bridge but also includes building a new nonmotorized path across it as well as improvements over the Grand Rapids Eastern Railroad crossing just south of I-96.
