The Michigan Department of Transportation announced on April 9 that it will begin a $1.5 million improvement project for the I-94 Business Loop (Gratiot Road) between Range Road and I-94 BL/M-29 in Marysville, starting April 20. The work is scheduled to be completed by October.

The project aims to enhance road safety and driving conditions for residents and commuters in St. Clair County, particularly those traveling through Marysville and Port Huron. According to the department, “This work will provide drivers with a smoother, safer driving surface.”

The construction will occur in two stages. During the first stage, which is expected to finish by early July, outside lanes of Gratiot Road will be closed while one lane remains open in each direction along with the center left-turn lane. In the second stage, three inside lanes will close with outer lanes remaining open for traffic.

Economic modeling suggests that this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 13 jobs as part of the local economic impact.

The Michigan Department of Transportation manages nearly 10,000 miles of state highways as well as more than 4,800 bridges and other transportation infrastructure according to its official website. The department also oversees non-motorized trails, railroad tracks, airports, public transit programs, rail services and safety standards according to its official website.

With over 2,800 employees working across seven regions and multiple facilities statewide according to its official website, MDOT’s mission focuses on serving people and communities through transportation efforts according to its official website. Leadership includes a director along with key executives such as chief administrative officer and chief operations officer according to its official website.

As this project progresses toward completion in October, drivers are advised to follow posted detours during both stages of construction.
