Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued a statement on Apr. 1 following oral arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Trump v. Barbara.
The issue centers on birthright citizenship, a topic that has drawn national attention and could have significant effects on immigration law and the lives of many Americans.
Nessel said, “President Trump’s attempt to redefine birthright citizenship is a flagrant violation of the U.S. Constitution and a deeply dishonest effort to erase one of the clearest and most fundamental principles in our country. Birthright citizenship is at the heart of our American story and is what makes our country a nation of opportunity and belonging.”
She continued, “To suggest otherwise is not only wrong but an insult to the experiences of countless Michiganders whose lives reflect what it truly means to be American. A contrary ruling in this impactful case would fundamentally change the fabric of our country, and I urge the Supreme Court to defend the Constitution and protect the integrity of the American story.”
The outcome of Trump v. Barbara may set new legal precedent regarding who qualifies for citizenship by birth in the United States.
Observers across Michigan are watching closely as this case moves forward, with Nessel’s remarks reflecting concerns about possible changes to longstanding constitutional interpretations.
