The Michigan Retailers Association released sidewalk sale strategies on Apr. 9, offering advice to help retailers maximize the impact of their spring events.

Sidewalk sales are a seasonal opportunity for local businesses to increase visibility and attract shoppers. The association’s guidance focuses on practical steps that can help stores stand out and drive traffic during these events.

Retailers are encouraged to use high-visibility signage such as sandwich boards, flags, window decals, or digital signs to draw attention from passersby. Featuring popular inventory in window displays is also recommended as a way to entice shoppers into the store.

The association suggests leveraging loyalty programs by providing extra incentives or bonus rewards for members during sidewalk sales. This approach aims to encourage repeat visits and boost overall participation in the event.

Clearly marking discounted items is another key recommendation, helping customers understand sale prices and avoid confusion at checkout. Coordinating with local business groups or neighboring stores is advised so that retailers can benefit from increased foot traffic during community events and foster relationships with other merchants.

Retailers who have had successful sidewalk sales are invited to share their experiences in the group “Michigan Retailers Strategizing Together” on Facebook.
