The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) reminded workers on Apr. 9 to ensure they have downloaded their 1099-G tax statement if they received unemployment benefits in 2025, as the end of tax season approaches.

This reminder is important because the information on the 1099-G form is required for accurate state and federal income tax filings. Anyone who received unemployment benefits last year must include this document when submitting their taxes.

Workers can access their 1099-G by logging into their Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM) account, where a digital copy is available. Paper copies were mailed earlier in the year to those who requested them. If a worker cannot find or access their statement, UIA advises calling Customer Service at 1-866-500-0017 for assistance. For corrections to the information on a 1099-G, individuals are directed to download a Request to Correct Form from Michigan.gov/UIA and submit it by mail or fax.

The agency explained that discrepancies between amounts listed and payments actually received may occur due to automatic deductions such as repayments of overpayments or court-ordered payments. Additionally, unemployment benefits are taxed in the year paid out, which may differ from when someone was unemployed. The UIA also warned that receiving a 1099 without having filed a claim could indicate identity theft and urged affected individuals to contact them immediately.

The Bureau of Labor and Economic Opportunity aims to broaden economic opportunities and foster prosperity for all, according to the official website. The bureau serves residents across Michigan according to its official website, providing services in areas such as economic development, workforce training, housing, mobility, and unemployment assistance as detailed on its official site. It operates within economic development and workforce initiatives according to its official website.

To support claimants further, UIA offers resources including an online Claimant Roadmap guide at Michigan.gov/UIAClaimantRoadmap; an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot; online coaching sessions; guidance for federal employees; free legal help through its Advocacy Program; interactive data dashboards; modernization efforts with new user platforms; an Employer Help Center at Michigan.gov/UIAEmployerHelpCenter; and multiple ways for users or employers with questions about claims or programs to get help.
