The Michigan Department of Transportation announced on April 1 that a curb and gutter project will start on US-24 (Dixie Highway) in northern Oakland County next week, with work expected to continue through late summer.

The project covers a nine-mile stretch between Telegraph Road and Interstate 75, affecting the communities of Waterford and Independence Townships. The department said that starting Tuesday, April 7, one lane will remain open in each direction as crews work in one-mile increments from the south end at Telegraph Road northward to I-75. The improvements are intended to enhance drainage along the highway, which is expected to increase safety during rain events and help preserve the roadway’s condition.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation’s official website, it manages nearly 10,000 miles of state highways, more than 4,800 bridges, about 2,700 miles of non-motorized trails, over 665 miles of railroad track, and various airports. The agency has more than 2,800 employees working across seven regions with a network that includes transportation service centers and other facilities statewide according to its official website.

The department’s mission focuses on serving people and communities while supporting economic activity through transportation initiatives according to its official website. Leadership includes a director as well as key executives such as chief administrative officer and chief operations officer according to its official website.

Statewide operations cover nearly 9,669 miles of highway infrastructure along with related transport assets according to its official website. The department is responsible for maintaining M-, I-, and US-routes throughout Michigan while overseeing bridge maintenance programs; rail services; public transit; aviation initiatives; non-motorized trails; and safety standards according to its official website.

As this project moves forward into late summer completion is anticipated. Motorists are advised that traffic will be maintained but may experience delays due to lane closures.
