On Saturday, Aug. 10, the GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology hosted its inaugural Order of the Engineer Ceremony in Ypsilanti. This event brought together alumni and recent graduates of the college to celebrate their transition from students to professionals.

A stainless steel ring was placed on each inductee's hand to mark their commitment to ethical engineering practices. According to the website, the Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, bridge the gap between training and experience, and present a visible symbol identifying engineers to the public. By taking the Obligation of the Engineer and wearing the stainless steel ring on their working hand, participants publicly pledged to practice integrity, fairness, and respect in their professional endeavors.

"Our students have always been known for their academic excellence and dedication to the engineering field," said Mohamad Qatu, dean of the GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology. "This ceremony marks a significant milestone in their careers as they commit to ethical practices and the betterment of society. It is an honor to see so many of our alumni return to take this important step with us."

The ceremony was facilitated by John Earl, laboratory manager and lecturer for the GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology. Earl emphasized the importance of the pledge in the engineering profession. "The Order of the Engineer is more than just a ceremony—it's a commitment to values that define our profession. I am immensely proud of our graduates for embracing this responsibility and their continued dedication to advancing the engineering field with integrity."

Abby Langton, a recent electrical and computer engineering graduate who assisted in planning the event, reflected on her experience: "It was an honor to be part of EMU’s first ceremony, and an incredible opportunity to connect with past graduates and other ring-bearers. I now proudly wear my ring and remember my oath as I start my journey in this profession. Being part of planning was an incredible experience, and I’m proud to have contributed to such a meaningful event."

This inaugural ceremony marks the beginning of a new tradition at The GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology, reinforcing its mission to produce skilled engineers who will positively impact society.
