Eastern Michigan University will host a discussion with Leroy Clemons on the role of youth during the Civil Rights Movement. The event, organized by the College of Arts and Sciences Civil Rights and Social Justice Center, is scheduled for October 29 from 5-7 p.m. Clemons will share his experiences in advocating for justice and voting rights.

Barbara Patrick, professor of political science and director of the EMU Civil Rights and Social Justice Center, emphasized the significance of young activists in securing civil rights. "Voting is a cornerstone of the Civil Rights Movement," said Patrick. She highlighted that remembering their contributions ensures their sacrifices are not forgotten.

Patrick also noted that while current students were not alive during these events, understanding them provides context for ongoing social justice efforts. "What took place shined a bright light on the gross racial inequities in America," she stated.

Clemons, who hails from Philadelphia, Mississippi, played a key role in reopening the investigation into the murders of three young activists during Freedom Summer. His efforts led to Edgar Ray Killen's conviction in 2005.

The event is free to attend and offers LBC credit. For more information, contact EMU's political science department at 734-487-3113 or plsc_dept@emich.edu.

Eastern Michigan University was founded in 1849 and serves nearly 13,000 students across various disciplines. The university is recognized for its diversity and commitment to applied education.
