Eastern Michigan University is set to host an event focusing on democracy and political issues ahead of the 2024 presidential election. The discussion, titled "State of Democracy: A Look at the 2024 Election and Party Politics," will occur on October 23 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Sill Hall, room 124. Admission is free but limited.

The event will address concerns such as polarization, misinformation, and political rhetoric's increasing intensity. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D) and State Representative Andrew Beeler (R) will lead a bipartisan discussion about these issues, moderated by EMU political science professor Jeffrey Bernstein. A Q&A session will follow.

Barbara Patrick, professor of political science and director of the EMU Civil Rights and Social Justice Center, emphasized the importance of informed voting: “Knowledge plus voting equals power,” she stated. “It is imperative that we share factual information, better inform citizens, and strongly urge them to vote.”

Although admission is free and LBC credit eligible, registration is required for attendance.

Founded in 1849, Eastern Michigan University serves nearly 13,000 students across various disciplines through its multiple colleges. It has received recognition for its excellence in education and diversity.
