The University of Michigan has finalized the purchase of a 2.3-acre parcel of land in Detroit for $9.5 million from MGM Grand Detroit. This site, located at 2201 W. Grand River Ave., is strategically positioned across from the U-M Center for Innovation (UMCI) and is intended to support the center's future requirements.
Part of this newly acquired land will be dedicated to constructing a parking structure, which is currently in the preliminary design phase. The structure will cater to UMCI's needs and may include retail options on its first floor. With this acquisition, other properties previously considered in the area are no longer necessary.
In December 2023, Olympia Development of Michigan donated 2.1 acres at Grand River Avenue and West Columbia Street to facilitate the construction of UMCI by the university. Olympia Development of Michigan, along with Related Companies, plans to develop two additional buildings on this block—a residential building and an incubator space—at a later date.
Construction commenced nearly a year ago on the six-story UMCI building, which spans 200,000 gross square feet. The project aims to create a world-class research, education, and entrepreneurship center that will drive innovation and community development focused on talent advancement. It seeks to stimulate economic growth in Detroit through job creation and inclusive economic development across the city, region, and state.
Programming at UMCI will employ a mixed-model approach offering both master's degrees and workforce development programs centered around technology and innovation.
