Recent University of Michigan graduates Hannah Feng and Genevieve Welch are currently participating in the Fulbright Program, with Feng conducting research in Canada and Welch studying music in Hungary. Their work exemplifies the program's focus on cultural exchange and addressing global challenges.
Feng collaborates with the Vancouver Island Counseling Centre for Immigrants and Refugees and the University of Victoria to study youth mental health among immigrant communities. Her project aims to reduce stigma and improve help-seeking behaviors through a peer ambassador program. "Mental health stigma is one of the greatest barriers preventing newcomer youth from seeking the support they need," Feng stated, emphasizing her goal to demonstrate how peer-led interventions can create meaningful change.
Welch is pursuing choral conducting at Budapest's Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, immersing herself in Hungary’s musical traditions. She expressed her passion for exploring local choral scenes and refining her craft, stating, "Hungary’s deep musical roots, legendary composers and world-class educational institutions make it the ideal place for me."
The University of Michigan has a strong history with the Fulbright Program, having received numerous scholar and student awards since its inception. U-M President Santa J. Ono praised the recipients: “We are truly honored and delighted to share in honoring U-M’s extraordinary Fulbright students and faculty scholars.”
Omolade Adunbi, another U-M scholar awarded a Fulbright grant, is researching energy and climate change in Nigeria at the University of Ibadan. His work examines technology's role alongside environmental advocacy. "My research on climate change has been eye-opening," Adunbi said, highlighting both challenges and community resilience.
The Fulbright Program continues to facilitate international academic exchanges since 1946, providing opportunities for participants worldwide to engage in meaningful research and cultural dialogue.
