Eastern Michigan University will host a Juneteenth panel discussion on liberation, justice, and Black politics in America. The event, titled “The Future of Black Politics in America Revisited,” is open to the public and scheduled for June 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Student Center in Ypsilanti.
Victor Okafor, head of Africology and African American Studies at EMU, stated, “This Juneteenth panel topic highlights our university's active engagement with civic issues of the day, practical issues that affect our lives as individuals and as a community.” He added that it demonstrates the university's commitment to inclusive education.
Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned they were free. This year’s discussion serves as a continuation of conversations from a previous Black History Month event.
Panelists will discuss their experiences with politics as African Americans. Audience members can ask questions and learn about staying politically engaged.
Eric Brown, one of the panelists, emphasized the importance of political discussions: “It allows for people to put down their guards and leave the silos that they are in so that they are open to an alternative position.”
Mark Fancher, another panelist, noted, “Revolutionary change can only be accomplished by the broad masses of people and not by the intelligentsia alone.”
