Eastern Michigan University is offering middle school girls an opportunity to explore the tech world through its Bits and Bytes summer camp. This week-long program, now in its ninth year, runs from June 23-27, 2025, on EMU's campus.
The camp is organized by EMU’s Department of Computer Science and aims to increase young women's representation in computing by building their confidence and skills. "Participants will go beyond learning theoretical concepts and actively apply their knowledge through real-world projects," said Krish Narayanan, computer science professor and program director at EMU. Activities include coding with educational software, game development, mobile app creation, drone flying, and robot programming.
Krish Narayanan leads the camp alongside computer science students who act as near-peer mentors. This approach fosters a collaborative environment where students can explore new concepts.
The camp concludes with a hackathon and career discovery event to help participants connect their learning to future educational and career paths. Sponsored by the Michigan Space Grant Consortium, the camp is free except for a $50 registration fee, with some scholarships available.
