Eastern Michigan University faculty members Aesha Mustafa and Kimberley Barker will present at the inaugural TEDxYpsilanti event. Scheduled for Friday, June 27, at Eagle Crest Resort in Ypsilanti, the event aims to foster storytelling and community dialogue.

Tony Smith, the lead organizer of TEDxYpsilanti, stated, "My goal with TEDx Ypsilanti is to give our community a platform to share truth, healing, and hope." He emphasized that the talks focus on overcoming obstacles and inspiring others.

The event will feature several speakers sharing personal stories on topics such as resilience, leadership, mental health, and equity. Among them are:

- Tony Smith discussing "How the Fatherless Can Be the Best Fathers," addressing how men without father figures can become intentional fathers.

- Aesha Mustafa presenting "Healing Out Loud: A Black Woman’s Truth on the Power of Breaking Silence and Ending Mental Health Stigma," focusing on vulnerability and storytelling as healing tools.

- Jaye Hill with "Broken Pieces," exploring grief and loss.

- Jeremy Grandstaff's talk titled "Designing Your Wealth: A Blind Man’s Story and Guide to Achieving Your Own Financial Opportunity."

- Kimberley Barker speaking on "Why Cultural Competence Should Be the New D.E.I."

Barker commented on diversity efforts by saying, “The goals of D.E.I. have always mattered—they pushed us to recognize disparities and work toward equity.” She advocates for cultural competence as a sustainable approach.

Mustafa highlighted the importance of open discussions about mental health in Black communities. “For too long, silence around mental health has weighed heavily on Black communities—especially for Black women,” she said.

The program begins at 6 p.m., with doors opening an hour earlier. Tickets cost $30 and are available via Eventbrite. The venue offers free parking but requires attendees under 18 to be accompanied by an adult.

Eastern Michigan University was founded in 1849 and serves nearly 13,000 students across various disciplines. The university is recognized for its commitment to applied education.
