Eastern Michigan University (EMU) is set to launch its inaugural Esports Summer Camp from July 14-18 at the EMU Student Center in Ypsilanti. The camp, targeting middle school students aged 11 to 14, will run daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The program will be led by professional staff and experienced student-athletes from EMU's Esports team. It aims to offer a balanced experience that combines gaming with off-screen learning activities designed to develop skills such as communication, teamwork, focus, memory, introspection, and performance under pressure. Participants will engage in both mental and physical exercises reflecting the values of the esports industry while exploring gaming as an academic and professional field.

“We’re excited to bring esports and gaming education to the next generation,” said Zachary Lewis, coordinator of the EMU Esports program. “This camp is about more than just gameplay—it’s about building a learning environment that helps students grow and develop in a safe, collaborative space. We also hope to engage families and educators in seeing the positive potential of esports as a structured, valuable discipline.”

Enrollment for the camp is capped at 25 participants to ensure quality interaction. Campers are required to bring their own lunch each day; however, snacks will be provided twice daily. This event marks the beginning of several planned camps by EMU Esports that may include expanded topics like competitive gaming and content creation aimed at high school students.

The cost for attending is $318 per participant, which includes an $18 registration fee. Registration has already begun and will close on June 30, 2025. Families interested in enrolling can find more information on the EMU Esports website.

Founded in 1849, Eastern Michigan University is Michigan's second oldest public university serving nearly 13,000 students across various disciplines through its multiple colleges.
