University of Michigan study finds VR interview tool helps former inmates gain employment

A recent study from the University of Michigan suggests that virtual reality job interview training may help individuals returning from incarceration secure employment more quickly. The research, funded by the National Institute of Justice and conducted in partnership with two Michigan prisons, examined whether an online simulator could improve job prospects for people reentering the workforce after prison.

The randomized controlled trial involved over 100 participants. About two-thirds received virtual training using a program that offered realistic interview scenarios and speech recognition feedback. Six months after release, many of those who participated in the training reported having secured jobs. Researchers observed that improved interviewing skills led to better employment outcomes both before release and after individuals returned to their communities.

“Implementing virtual job interview training within vocational services could bridge a critical gap in employment readiness, thereby helping returning citizens to overcome barriers to employment,” said Matthew Smith, U-M professor of social work and the study’s lead author.

Smith, who is also associate dean for research at the School of Social Work and director of U-M’s Level Up: Employment Skills Simulation Lab, emphasized the importance of equal opportunity in hiring. He noted that when people impacted by the criminal legal system find jobs, they are able to make meaningful contributions as they pursue career pathways.

He added that employers benefit as well by gaining access to skilled workers at a time when many industries face labor shortages.

The Michigan Department of Corrections collaborated on the project.
