Eastern Michigan University has secured a five-year, $1.3 million renewal for its TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program. The funding will allow the university to continue offering academic support to first-generation, low-income students and students with disabilities through 2030.
The TRIO SSS program at EMU serves 140 students each year, providing them with resources such as tutoring, mentoring, workshops, professional development opportunities, and connections to campus services. These efforts are aimed at helping students achieve both personal and academic goals.
Anthony Webster, director of TRIO Student Support Services at EMU, said, “The renewal of our TRIO funding allows us to continue building a supportive environment where first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities can succeed. This funding not only provides academic resources but also allows us to foster a culture of care and belonging that empowers our students to reach their full potential.”
Damián Rivare, a first-generation Latino student at EMU who participates in the program, described the impact of TRIO on his college experience: “TRIO has been an important part of my education journey. It helps me navigate the challenges of higher education, provides academic support, leadership development, and community engagement. TRIO gives students like me the confidence to succeed and ensures future students have the same opportunities to thrive in spaces where they may not always feel supported.”
Now entering its tenth year at EMU, the program’s ongoing presence reflects the university’s commitment to student success and equity in higher education. The grant renewal process included advocacy from organizations such as the Council for Opportunity in Education and highlighted EMU’s record of providing strong support for its students.
Recruitment for TRIO SSS involves working with various campus offices and current participants who share their experiences to encourage new enrollment.
Webster added: “TRIO is more than an academic support program; it’s a community. Our students know they are part of something larger than themselves. They feel seen, supported, and empowered to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.”
