Eastern Michigan University’s podcast “Enlighten U” has started its third season with a special episode focused on the campus programs and services that support student mental health and academic achievement. The hour-long back-to-school episode features five leaders from different university offices, each describing resources available to students.

The guests include Oscar Alcaine, director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS); Calvin McFarland, associate vice president for Student Success & Academic Support Services; Kristine Gatchel, assistant director of Writing Across the Curriculum; Juniper Bamrick, engagement & activities coordinator for Campus Life; and Ron Flowers, chair of the EMU Task Force on Student Mental Health and Well Being.

“College is an exciting but often challenging time for students,” said Lolita Cummings, an “Enlighten U” co-host and professor of public relations.  “Because of that, we are beginning season three by letting students know everyone at the university is committed to their mental health and academic success. Our back-to-school episode is the ideal time to feature these department leaders. Now, students will know about the services all year long.”

Throughout the episode, campus program leaders discuss specific efforts designed to improve student well-being by enhancing academic performance, reducing stress levels, and promoting a healthier campus environment. Listeners also receive practical advice on managing academics alongside mental health needs and learn how to access various support resources.

“Enlighten U” is produced by Eastern Michigan University as a resource for college students dealing with issues such as academic pressure, personal development challenges, social concerns, financial strain, grading anxiety, adjustment to campus life, social media effects, and social justice topics. Each monthly episode typically includes a student or alum along with a subject-matter expert.

Founded in 1849, Eastern Michigan University serves nearly 13,000 students across undergraduate through doctoral programs in more than 300 fields of study. The university is regularly recognized in national publications for its educational quality and diversity. More information about EMU can be found on its official website.
