Eastern Michigan University’s engineering programs have achieved their highest national ranking to date, reaching No. 60 in the U.S. News & World Report “Best Colleges” rankings for institutions that do not offer doctoral degrees in engineering. Out of 291 eligible programs, EMU is now the top-ranked public university in Michigan within this category.

The university’s undergraduate engineering offerings—mechanical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and civil engineering—have been recognized for their strong academic standards and career-oriented approach. These programs emphasize practical learning experiences, faculty with industry experience, and partnerships with major firms across Southeast Michigan. According to EMU officials, these factors contribute to a high job placement rate among graduates.

“Our engineering programs continue to grow in both reputation and enrollment,” said Mohamad Qatu, dean of EMU’s GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology. “This ranking affirms the strength of our faculty and the intentional support we provide to ensure students graduate ready to launch meaningful, high-paying careers.”

Michigan faces a growing need for engineers that exceeds the number of qualified graduates available each year. This trend benefits EMU students as they enter the workforce. “Many of our students secure job offers before graduation,” Qatu added. “They’re entering the workforce with confidence, experience, and the skills employers need most.”

Other undergraduate programs at Eastern Michigan University also received national recognition in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report rankings:

- The nursing program was ranked #186 out of 686 nationwide.

- The computer science program placed #274 out of 601.

- The psychology program ranked #329 out of 682.

These rankings are based on several criteria including graduation rates, retention rates, faculty resources, peer assessments, and student outcomes. They are widely used by families when making college decisions.

EMU serves nearly 13,000 students across more than 300 academic areas through its various colleges including Arts and Sciences; Business; Education; Engineering and Technology; Health and Human Services; as well as its graduate school.
