Eastern Michigan University (EMU) has announced the launch of a new program aimed at supporting entrepreneurs from low-income families in Southeast Michigan. The initiative, set to begin in January 2026, is part of EMU’s ongoing efforts to promote job and career readiness among students and the broader community.
The program will be managed by EMU’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CFEI). It is structured to provide business training, mentorship, technical assistance, intern support, and financial aid. All workshops will be delivered virtually with some in-person meetings at the CFEI in Ypsilanti to ensure accessibility across the region.
“This program is about more than supporting businesses; it’s about building community and advancing career pathways,” said Professor Sanjib Chowdhury, director of the EMU Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. “Entrepreneurs who often feel left out of traditional networks will find a place here. By surrounding them with mentorship, training, and financial support, we’re helping them succeed in business and career growth while strengthening the fabric of Southeast Michigan.”
Key elements of the program include professional training led by senior faculty that results in an EMU-CFEI certification for participants. Each entrepreneur will receive guidance from at least two mentors as well as consulting services provided by senior-level EMU students under faculty supervision. This support covers areas such as business planning, market research, product development, marketing strategies, and technical services.
Participants’ businesses will also benefit from approximately 100 hours of free part-time intern support funded through the program. Additionally, each entrepreneur can expect targeted funding averaging $6,000 intended for critical expenses like equipment purchases or staffing needs.
Applications are now open for interested entrepreneurs but spaces are limited. The deadline to apply is November 21, 2025.
“This is a chance for hardworking entrepreneurs from low-income families to finally see their aspirations take shape both as business owners and career professionals,” Chowdhury said. “When we uplift underserved entrepreneurs, we uplift neighborhoods, we uplift families, and we create opportunities for lasting impact.”
Founded in 1849, Eastern Michigan University serves nearly 13,000 students across various degree programs through its multiple colleges including Arts and Sciences; Business; Education; Engineering and Technology; Health and Human Services; along with its graduate school.
